HAPPY INTERNATIONAL PILATES DAY!

International Pilates Day is an annual international community event recognized on the first Saturday of May.

This year, we celebrate International Pilates Day on Saturday, May 7th. To get into the spirit of things, here is a bit about the origins of this beloved practice...

Joseph H. Pilates was born December 9th, 1883, and his journey didn't start out so well. As a child, he suffered from rheumatic fever, rickets and asthma, and was often bullied by his peers. Rather than seeing this as his fate, he was motivated to become an athlete. Joes’ father was also an athlete and his mother was a naturopath.

Joe’s training came from many sources: working at a sports center that offered gymnastics, wrestling, skiing, boxing, yoga and more. As a child, Joe would stay in the woods for hours observing animals and their movements. By age 14, his initial frailty had resolved, and he developed a strengthened body and a lifelong credo.

PRACTICE PERSISTENCE PERSEVERANCE

Joe became known for training many others in his creation of The Pilates Method, including:

- detainees at the Man of Isle during WWI - war injured individuals (using hospital bed springs for rehabilitation the inspiration of Joes’ first piece of Pilates equipment, the Cadillac)

- German Police Force

- dancers needing physical rehabilitation

Joe emigrated to America in 1925 and met his future wife (and Pilates student), Clara. They began teaching The Pilates Method for fitness and rehabilitation at a gym in New York. Their students consisted of a variety of celebrities, wealthy New York socialites, members of the Armed Forces and many professional dancers.

Today Joe and Clara’s valuable, highly effective and inspiring method of a “whole body exercise system” is practiced around the world by all ages for fitness, sports development, and rehabilitation of all kinds.

Tracy Coe, Pilates teacher of 20 years and owner of CoeDynamics Redondo Beach, is celebrating the creation of Pilates that Joe & Clara brought to this world with the Pilates community.
