Hormones: Let Your Body Balance & Detoxify (Part II)
Updated: Jan 11
Did you know the use of any natural, synthetic, or bio-identical hormones could have a long term damaging effect on your body and health? While Part I listed elements that can cause your hormones to go out of whack and create symptoms such as severe PMS/menopause, depression, chronic fatigue, weight gain and etc. Today’s section will explore how the use of hormones can even further imbalance your existing hormone levels with the potential to create more severe health damage/symptoms.
Even Natural & Bio-Identical?
It may be easier to consider how something synthetic can cause an imbalance and/or damage but, some of you might be questioning “how can natural and bio-identical be harmful to my body?” Whether you are using synthetic, natural or bio-identical hormones they all have the same impact on the body in that, once your endocrine system becomes aware that it is being given hormones it will become lazy and stop producing its own hormones. Stating, Dr. Theresa Dale PhD, DNS, C.C.N., N.P. “the only natural hormone is the one produced by your own body.” Anytime the body is given a replacement hormone (natural, bio-identical, or synthetic) it can cause the body to become dependent and suppress the body’s own ability to produce hormones.
What is so harmful about that? So glad you asked! The primary harm is by giving your body hormones it does not address the cause of the imbalance but rather tries to manage the symptom with a potential result of side effects that negate health. For instance, it has been scientifically proven that oral or topical use of hormones (synthetic, natural, bio-identical) can elevate existing hormones levels to toxically high amounts. This toxicity taxes and overloads your organs/glands such as the liver, kidneys, blood, immune and adrenal glands to damaging levels and many times lead to other health issues. For instance, the use of hormone replacement can trigger adrenal glands to release abnormal levels of cortisol (stress hormone) which can incapacitate restful sleep and create the feeling of chronically exhausted and/or stressed and accelerates aging.
According to the Women’s Health Initiative Memory Study (2003) hormone toxicity is linked to a variety of side effects such as:
loss of libido
breast/ovarian lumps and tumors
increased rate of dementia
toxicity of liver, kidneys blood and immune
cardiovascular disease and stroke
just to name a few.
Statistical view of Hormone Replacement Side Effects
Dr. Theresa Dale, Homeopath, Traditional Naturopath, Certified Clinical Nutritionist, Doctor of Naturopathic Sciences, Medical Consultant, Founder, California College of Natural Medicine conducted a research on over 20,000 saliva hormone panel tests of patients taking some form of hormone replacement (synthetic, natural, bio-identical). This research demonstrated that the use of hormones accelerates one’s existing hormones to highly toxic levels. The following outcomes were documented:
90% using natural and/or compounded HRT over 3 months showed abnormal and/or toxic hormone ratios, and cortisol levels
95% using HRT synthetic progesterone and estrogen showed abnormal hormone and cortisol levels, estrogen dominance, and toxicity
100% using synthetic hormones risked cancer
Other Health Damaging Effects of Hormone Use
“Natural Cream” may not be so natural: many have found to also have highly questionable ingredients, including that effect liver be carcinogenic, such as propylene glycol, peg-8 stearate, and methyl paraben.
In one study, 13 of 14 natural progesterone cream products did not contain any actual natural progesterone at all!
Birth control also has many side effects: lifetime deficiency of B6, chronic urinary tract infections, estrogen-induced side effects (weight gain, mood swings, breast tenderness), can prevent ovulation, induce yeast overgrowth, prevent implantation of a fertilized egg in the endometrium or lining of the uterus, thicken the mucus around the cervix, making it difficult for sperm to penetrate.
Common Mythical Reasons People Rely on Taking Hormones
Replacement protects against osteoporosis and heart disease
The body is incapable of supplying hormones after a certain age or when the body slows down
There are no side effects to hormone replacement (synthetic, natural, bio-identical)
Women with hysterectomies can no longer produce certain hormones
HGH, DHEA, Melatonin are all safe for consumption
HRT is necessary for women after 40 years of age.
Very high levels of progesterone, as seen in blood and saliva testing, is not toxic
Natural hormone replacement is safe, if monitored
So What Now?
Do not draw to despair, the bodies and mind our Wonderful Creator has made are one dynamic piece of work with an innate ability to balance and detoxify, when given the proper care even if you’ve been taking hormone replacement for years, had a hysterectomy or feel you’ve already tried “everything else and hormones are the only thing that works.” Part III of this Blog series will explain how you can rejuvenate your hormonal system and alleviate symptoms of hormone imbalance rather then be dependent on hormone replacements that as you have read above, can create a host of detrimental side effects and impede your life of vitality.
