Up until about 5 years ago, the most common question I was asked about Pilates was, “What is Pilates?” Now that Pilates has widely expanded, many have discovered Pilates as an exercise but it is also so much more!

Pilates (originally named Contrology by Joseph H. Pilates in 1914) when practiced utilizing the foundational principles (Breathe, Control, Precision, Flow, Concentration, Centering) goes beyond being just an exercise. The execution of Pilates movements incorporates effective Breathing to supply oxygen to the body as well as massage vital organs, with Concentration and Centering alignment and improved posture are obtained which also support healthy joints, Control and Precision brings about strength and flexibility to the whole body and particularly to the spine to maintain the body’s youth, while Flow builds stamina and brings toning. “Contrology develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit”

The question that tops the charts today about Pilates is “How Many Pilates Sessions Should I Take?”

To truly obtain and maintain the benefits that Pilates offers, the key answer is consistency. A much more defined answer to this question is given in one of my favorite Joseph H. Pilates quotes, “You will feel better in 10 sessions, look better in 20 sessions, and have a complete new body in 30 sessions.” I highly recommend reading deeper into this quote as was so beautifully written by Pilates and Biomechanics Teacher, Shari Berkowtiz, in her blog 10 sessions, 20 sessions, 30 sessions…. Where Shari expands on her words “You know that the more often you do Pilates, the more quickly and intensely you see and feel a difference in your body.” Shari Berkowtiz, is also a well known leader in the education of Pilates both nationally and internationally and founder of Shari Berkowitz & The Vertical Workshop, an international traveling studio.

The second answer to the above question, is incorporating Pilates into your functional movements of daily activity whether its sitting at your desk, in your car, picking up items, as well as incorporating it into your other athletic regimes walking, marathon running, swimming, tennis, volleyball, baseball, dance, hockey, horseback riding the list goes on and on…

Now, here is something you may also enjoy hearing. Consistency does not mean you have to spend all your money going to a Pilates studio! Consistency is, as Shari says, Doing Pilates outside of the session becomes the norm.” As a matter of fact, you can practice Pilates from memory or videos right in your own living room hotel room and/or at your gym. In addition, you’ll be amazed on how just a 10 minute practice can be so effective! My encouragement to you is, receive Pilates instruction that practices the principle of Pilates, build a rapport with a certified Pilates Teacher that you can take minimally a once or twice a week session with, then build this into your home practice and daily routines.
