In a time of Pilates in abundance studios, teachers, and a variety of clients it has definitely taken on many roles and there is a much broader array of exercises (classic, modified, and non-traditional Pilates) movements being implemented in one’s sessions today. Positive outcomes have reached any where from freeing one from aching low back, neck, shoulders, hips; getting that toned, slimmed physique; improved posture, de-stressed, enhanced confidence, self-esteem, balance. The list can go on and on.

On another note, Pilates in abundance of taking many roles has many times lost the primary principles (Breath, Flow, Centering, Control, Flow, Precision) and unfortunately have times resulted in just the reverse of the positive outcomes above, including worsened posture and sometimes even injury. As a Pilates Teacher and Studio Owner of almost 10 years, I have seen this unfortunate situation with new clients walking through my door many times that have had prior Pilates sessions. Many times this is a result of primary Pilates principles were not implemented or practiced or even introduced at the get go of one’s Pilates trainings and work-outs. Instead the clients where initially pleased by getting a kick-butt work-out that resulted in working the same over used muscle groups (low back, quadriceps, hip flexors, rectus abdominals, and upper trapezius muscles).

Don’t get me wrong, Pilates IS a kick-butt work-out but when done following primary principles of Pilates (mentioned above) you are initiating with the strength and endurance (or building strength/endurance) with a whole different set of muscles primarily called postural muscles or Pilates “Core” (respiratory, transverse abdominal, pelvic floor, multifidi) as well as strengthening the many times underused extensor and balance muscles such as: hamstrings, gluteus, adductors, low & mid trapezius, serratus. With the strength and endurance of these new found muscles you now have the posture, flexibility, range of motion, to support you through your Pilates exercises and daily living activities. This results in actually working more muscles at the same time getting you a FULL Body work-out versus just working out the same old tired muscles (low back, quadriceps, hip flexors, rectus abdominals, and upper trapezius muscles) that it eventually will lead to worsened posture and possibly even injury of over use.

So next time your are in your Pilates class, take inventory, are you …..

1. Breathing? And then if you are, is your breathe efficient creating the flow of your movement

2. What muscles are you really using to get your Posture in position and in motion? Are they your same old big muscle groups are do you have the intricate Pilates core/postural muscles invited to the party too?

3. Where are your movements initiating from? Are your Pilates “core” muscles even “turned on” contracted?

4. Are your movements flowing, “look” (not feel) like they are being performed easily or are you pushing, shoving, punching, gritting teeth and holding your breathe?

5. Are you being patient with yourself to learn new tricks rather then using your same old habits?

For more information, questions, comments respond to the comment section below. We would love to hear back from you.

Agent Organe produced by both Monsato and Dow Chemicals, was used to defoliate jungles during the Vietanm War. I know men that were in that war who face heart failure and brain disease due to it. If we know this stuff creates serious illnesses and we know it has a profound negative impact to our health, why do we still approve its use on our food crops?

Here’s how you can get involved:

If you live in California and are willing to attend a short training session and then start collecting petition signatures (you will be part of a team of 2-4 people) for the California Ballot Initiative, sign up here. (For more information see: The California Ballot Initiative: Taking Down Monsanto.) Also remember to share this information with family and friends in California!

Whether you live in California or not, please donate money to this historic effort.

Talk to organic producers and stores and ask them to actively support the California Ballot. It may be the only chance we have to require the proper labeling of genetically engineered foods.

Distribute WIDELY the Non-GMO Shopping Guide to help you identify and avoid foods with GMOs. Look for products (including organic products) that feature the Non-GMO Project Verified Seal to be sure that at-risk ingredients have been tested for GMO content. You can also download the free iPhone application that is available from the iTunes store. You can find it by searching for ShopNoGMO in the applications.

For timely updates, please join the Organic Consumers Association on Facebook, or follow them on Twitter

Look for in-depth coverage of the issue at the Institute for Responsible Technology, subscribe to Spilling the Beans, and check out their Facebook or Twitter.

You can also join the Non-GMO Project on Facebook, or Twitter

In the meantime, the simplest way to avoid GM foods is to buy whole, certified organic foods. By definition, foods that are certified organic must never intentionally use GM organisms, must be produced without artificial pesticides and fertilizers and come from an animal reared without the routine use of antibiotics, growth promoters or other drugs. Additionally, grass-fed beef will not have been fed GM corn feed, although now that GM alfalfa is approved, grass-fed will not always mean GMO free. You can also look for foods that are “non-GMO verified” by the Non-GMO Project.

Story at-a-glance

Dow AgroSciences (a subsidiary of Dow Chemicals) has developed a new generation of genetically modified (GM) crops — soybeans, corn and cotton — that are engineered to resist an herbicide called 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), which was a major ingredient in Agent Orange

Once the 2,4-D resistant seeds are released, it will mean farmers will be spraying massive amounts of the herbicide onto U.S. farmland; health effects linked to 2,4-D include birth defects, blood, liver and kidney toxicity

The 2,4-D-resistant crops are being touted as a solution to Monsanto’s Roundup Ready crops, which have triggered the creation of super weeds; however, the new crops will likely only add to the problem of herbicide resistance, while even greater amounts of herbicides are sprayed onto U.S. farmland, exposing millions to their harmful effects.

You have until February 27, 2012 to comment on Dow’s application for “non-regulated status” of its 2,4-D-resistant corn. This is a rare opportunity to let your opinion be heard that you do not support products that will increase the use of this toxic chemical once used in Agent Orange.

Have you ever heard in your Pilates session “put” or “pull” or “relax your shoulders down”? Have you ever thought about what muscles you are using to do this with?

When peoples shoulders are wrapped up around their ears there are a couple of things that might be happening.

1. A persons breathing may be the cause if they are not breathing in through the nose and into the deep portions of the lungs.

2. 2nd culprit are tight Upper Trapezius muscle and other various neck muscles due to a variety of movements/postural habits such as holding a bag on the same shoulder, having hands on steering wheel especially during tense times and a lot of keyboard typing just to name a few. When someone or a Pilates teacher instructs you to “put your shoulders down”, the natural tendency of putting your shoulders down is to use the same already tensed muscles that one should be learning how to give these muscles a break.

So how should one go about getting their shoulders out of your ears?

1. For one, check in on your daily breathing habits. Are you breathing your inhales through your nose or mouth? Only through your nose will you get the proper respiratory muscles working. While inhaling through your mouth is an automatic trigger to raise up the chest and shoulders. Give it a try. Place one hand on the top of your sternum on top of a shoulder and take an inhale through your mouth. Did you feel how the shoulder/sternum rose up in your hand during the inhale? Now with the same hand placement take an inhale through your nose and consciously direct the inhale into the lower part of your ribs (like you are blowing up balloons in the rib cage). You should have notice that your shoulders nor sternum did not rise up to your ears.

2. If you have the breathing portion down. The second thing you can work, is rather then pulling or relaxing the shoulders is to strengthen new muscles around the mid-back portion of the core that will automatically assist in “relaxing” or “keeping the shoulders down around your ears.” Give this exercise a try. a. allow your arms to hang down by your sides, b. bend your elbows so that your elbows are pointing down and the palms of your hands are facing away from you to the sides. While practicing your proper breathing. Hold this position for 5 – 10 seconds. Keeping the tips of your elbows slightly pressed forward, and continue to rotate/work your forearms so that your palms are facing away from you to the sides (rather then in front of you). NOTE you want to hold this position keeping a wide open back another words, without squeezing your shoulder blades together (another culprit of tight neck muscles). Try about 3 repetitions of this movement.

What you are achieving is building endurance of some core muscles around the mid back so that your body will not have to be told to “relax” the shoulders b/c it will already have some muscles that can better hold your posture up well without neck and upper shoulder tension!

For Your Health – Milk – what does a body good? “Raw vs. Pasteurized”

The purpose of these articles is not to convince you to drink either raw, pasteurized or milk at all.. Instead, they are being provided as educative tools for you to determine if what you are consuming and drinking is doing the body good. If you fit into the category of eating and drinking, then you need to know where your dairy/milk has come from and what it has been through.

article 1: http://www.westonaprice.org/making-it-practical/milk-it-does-a-body-good
article 2: http://grist.org/scary-food/2011-09-12-not-your-grandmas-milk/

Question 1: What makes you so passionate about teaching Pilates?
I love teaching connections! I get excited when clients experience and understand where the muscles are in the body and knowingly are working out correct muscles and then taking it into their day of good posture and movement without discomfort.

Question 2: Who has been your most influential teacher or inspired you the most?
I have a lot of people to thank who have guided me to be the instructor I am today, but if I had to choose one person who has inspired me to grow, it would have to be Marie-Jose Blom. It took my teaching into a different level!

Question 3: What is your favorite Pilates Exercise to teach? and Why?
My favorite exercise(s) are those that are in side lying position on the reformer working the gluteus, inner thigh, hamstrings, and hip rotators.

Question 4: What is your favorite food?
My comfort foods: sushi and korean stews, rice cakes, and noodles

Question 5: What is your favorite past time activity?
An escape from the busy life, being active (hiking to waterfalls, swimming in caves) while surrounded in beautiful and calming secluded areas.

BMCD Real Food-Weight Control-Detox Seminar has been an eye opener for those of us that have already attended. There was lots of talk about what’s good for you and what’s not especially when it came to milk, salt, yogurt, and water. Some of the most basic ingredients that are in our breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

It’s amazing how most of us think that what we purchase at the store in the organic section or even the foods we hear are good for us like soy and greek yogurt are not even giving us any nutritional value rather they are only chemically inducing us with more unnatural products. More reasons to shop at the local Farmers Market instead on mass produced markets.

Did you know that you can not only save money and time by making your own food/beverage but you will benefit more from all the natural ingredients by doing so? We have a few favorite recipes to share with you and we hope that you implement them into your daily eating habits.

Yogurt

6 simple steps:

Real Yogurt

To be time effective, use 1 gallon raw milk, it makes about 8×16 oz jars. Ideally, use dehydrator, start with step (b) and set the temp below 100 F. If no dehydrator, get creative with oven and start with step (a)

a) preheat oven @10 min when the oven temp is steady warm, turn it off completely and let it cool off til around 105F.

b) heat up the raw milk in stainless steel pot til it heats to 103F, stir to even out the temp during the process

c) pour the warm milk into the 8 16 oz jars

d) mix each milk jar with 2TSP of raw yogurt (as started if not available use 1 tsp homemade kefir and 1tsp whole plain milk yogurt the best quality possible or 2 tsp of whole plain yogurt) and blend and cap the lids tight.

e) transfer the warm jars into the warm oven

f) 12-18 hours later, transfer to fridge. It will store for weeks, the longer the culturing, the more potent, sour, and medicinal the batch becomes.

Fresh and cultured Ginger Ale

Makes 2 Quarts

Ginger Ale

3/4 c grated peeled ginger

1/4 c rapudra or organic sugar

2 tsp low temp. air dried pink salt*

1/4 c liquid whey

1/4 c fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice

2 Qts water

*(available for purchase at BMCD)

mix all ingredients in 2 quart sized glass container leave at least an inch between the liquid and lid, seal tight with lid. Leave in slightly warm place for 2 – 3 days to allow for the culturing effect to happen then place in refridgerator. Best to sip at warm temperature versus gulp down as a cold drink. Will last at least 2 months in the fridge (but promised will be drank faster then that enjoy).

Blessings of Wellnes

There is currently petitions to ban fluoridation. You can print out flyers at www.bit.ly/f-ions.com to help people become educated on why fluoride is not safe. Not only does it cause white and brown spots on teethe and bones but it is a drug and can cause neurological and brain disorders, kidney and thyroid problems, arthritis, bone cancer, migraines, infertiltiy, etc.

Water filters are a great way to avoid being contaminated by fluoride. Let us know if you have any companies you would recommend for water filter systems for the home and office. You can also visit www.bit.ly/ffilters.com

Get the F out of our water! Fluoride is a Drug.

The slide show with the mini projector worked out perfect! What a great tool that was easy to install and helped us all following the seminar clearly and gave us the ability to take notes. Bring your highlight, since the packet already has plenty of detailed information about everything from how the body processes good and bad to step by step 21 day Meal, Beverage, and Nutrional Product Guide!
